Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone with YAHL by Kaston H.
Hi, I’m Kaston from Piedmont, Oklahoma. I joined YAHL because a friend recommended it, and now I’m interested in the ways YAHL works to improve health in Oklahoma. YAHL focuses on helping young people break unhealthy habits and make lasting changes. As a member, I’ve made new friends and gained the chance to contribute to a healthier future for our state. Health activism is important to me, especially because of my own experience with unhealthy diet habits. I hope to use my experience to make a difference.
Through YAHL, I’ve learned some surprising things, like how tobacco companies use bright colors and appealing designs to attract young people. YAHL is committed to creating a healthier Oklahoma for everyone, regardless of age, gender, race or religion. One of my main goals is to step out of my comfort zone by talking to more people. Campaigns where we conduct surveys are great for this, as we get to interact with people from all walks of life, which really challenges me and helps me grow.
Before joining, we complete a training that covers essential skills and information about the YAHL program and the issues. My favorite parts of training include the exercises and team-building games. These games are a lot of fun and have helped me connect with other YAHL members, kickstarting some great friendships. I also appreciate the discussions on important issues, which give me the chance to talk openly about topics that matter.
By setting and working toward my goals in YAHL, I hope to inspire others to do the same. YAHL educates people about how easily youth can access tobacco and vapes and raises awareness of the impact these products have on health. I’m excited to see my community come together to support each other in building healthier habits.
