Showing my School the Dangers of Teen Tobacco Use with YAHL

My name is Brayden Duncan, and I’m going to be a junior at Howe High School. I have been in YAHL for about a year. YAHL has two campaigns named Counteract Tobacco and Elevate Student Health. My first YAHL event was our fall festival, where we were able to collect a lot of surveys for CounterAct Tobacco and educate attendees about the campaign. It was easy and fun to get surveys and some people even asked more questions about the campaign. By collecting surveys, I learned how important data is to help update state policies.

Elevate Student Health works on getting healthier food options, more physical exercise and clean water for our schools. The main reason I joined YAHL is because I see young kids vaping, and they think it’s cool, so I want to make a change and try to educate them about the dangers of vaping. Being a member of YAHL, I have learned more leadership skills like public speaking, networking and hosting events with confidence. This year I hope to host more events to spread awareness in my community about tobacco, nutrition and physical activity. I am so excited to start the new school year with YAHL.

Making an Impact with YAHL by Addison Null-Kelly

My passion for YAHL first started at the Leadership Summit in 2023. I was very nervous to be away from anyone I knew but quickly made close friendships that still follow me. Participating in activities around the city and being split into different groups each day forced me to make new friends, which helped with my social anxiety.
