How YAHL Leadership Team Prepared Me to Make Change by Payton Bounds
My name is Payton Bounds; I am a senior at Purcell High School. I have worked with many students who are a part of YAHL and on the leadership team. At the YAHL summit, we all gather from across Oklahoma for a few days to learn more about leadership. I originally joined YAHL for the volunteer hours, but I soon learned it was more than just the volunteer hours. There are many opportunities in YAHL to gain public speaking experience, learn how to fight against big tobacco and help schools improve student health. While at the YAHL leadership summit in Oklahoma City, I participated in a scavenger hunt to help build our people skills. There were many different activities you had to complete such as educating community members about YAHL, complimenting a stranger and collecting surveys. The surveys are to collect data about tobacco products or school health concerns. YAHL is important to me because it allows for students and others to learn about problems going on in the community and Oklahoma schools. I believe the more knowledge people have about school health or big tobacco allows for more opportunities for things to improve.
