Working Together to Protect Our Generation by Angie H.
Hi, my name is Angie. I’m from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. YAHL is an incredible program where we talk about how unhealthy habits—like poor eating, lack of physical activity, smoking and vaping—can affect our lives. Through YAHL, we learn what’s harmful to our health, how to recognize it and, most importantly, how to make positive changes. It’s a space where we support and encourage each other to live better, healthier lives. I joined YAHL to help people who need guidance toward a safer, healthier lifestyle and to gain a new perspective on life myself.
Two major issues I see in our generation are smoking and unhealthy eating. Smoking is extremely dangerous. It causes serious health problems like heart failure, lung cancer, heart attacks and even vision and hearing loss. In Oklahoma, too many teens are losing their health because of it. It’s a habit that starts small but quickly becomes deadly. YAHL is here to help teens and young adults understand the risks and push for changes—like stronger laws and cleaner environments. Whether someone struggles with addiction or not, YAHL can be a powerful resource. I truly believe my community can make a difference if we choose to listen, support and take action.
Unhealthy eating is another harmful habit I’ve seen—and personally experienced. It can lead to a variety of medical issues, and once it becomes routine, it’s hard to stop. I think YAHL can help change that, especially by encouraging schools to offer healthier food choices. If we can change what’s available, we can change how kids eat. YAHL gives students a voice and a chance to make real changes in their schools and communities. As a member, I’m committed to supporting anyone who wants to break out of these habits and live a healthier life.
My hope is that the number of young people affected by smoking and unhealthy eating continues to go down—not just in Oklahoma, but everywhere. I believe that with programs like YAHL, we can make that happen. Together, we’re working to protect the health of our generation and the ones to come.
