Teens Making a Difference with YAHL by Mia Vizueth

I’m Mia Vizueth, and I’m a junior at Stilwell High School. For the past two years, I’ve been part of an amazing program called YAHL, which stands for Youth Action for Health Leadership. YAHL brings together students from all over Oklahoma who are just as fired up about making a difference as I am. It’s honestly one of the coolest things I’ve ever been part of.

Every YAHL group has a Youth Field Organizer (YFO), who’s like a coach and mentor. They go above and beyond to help us grow as leaders and make real change happen. Whether it’s in elementary, middle or high schools, we’re getting out there to spread the word about health advocacy, and we even take it to the community level. However, the highlight of every year has to be the Summit!

Summit is a huge summer event held in Oklahoma City where we all come together to level up our skills. We learn things like public speaking, connecting with people and stepping up as leaders. These aren’t just lessons for YAHL—they’re life-changing skills we can carry into our future careers, college and beyond. We learn to be responsible, respectful, open-minded, and—most importantly—confident in who we are and what we stand for.

I joined YAHL because I’ve always wanted to make a difference. I see so many issues that impact teens like me, and I refuse to just sit back and let them continue. I’m passionate about standing up to big tobacco companies and protecting my generation from harmful products that target us. It’s not just about saying no to smoking or vaping—it’s about making sure our schools and communities are places where we can thrive. That means getting proper nutrition, access to clean water, and the physical activity we need to stay healthy.

YAHL has given me the tools to not just talk about these problems but to actually do something about them. That’s why I’m all in. Together, we can create a better Oklahoma—one that supports teens and protects our future!

How YAHL Shaped My High School Experience by Katherine Jones

Hi, my name is Katherine Jones, and I’m a senior at Westville High School. For the past four years, I’ve had the privilege of being part of Youth Action for Health Leadership (YAHL), and this year marks my third on the Leadership Team. YAHL has been an experience that has shaped not just my high school years but also the person I am today.

When I first joined YAHL, I joined for the promise of free food and the chance to skip class. But what started as a simple way to get out of class turned into a passion for making a difference. I soon realized that YAHL was more than just an extracurricular activity; it was a movement of young people like me who are determined to create healthier communities across Oklahoma.

Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to participate in a variety of events and opportunities. Some of my favorite experiences have been the Leadership Team Summit and the school trainings we conduct. The Summit is something I look forward to every year—it’s four days of excitement and learning. We gather from all over the state, and it’s amazing how quickly we form bonds with each other. We spend our days developing public speaking skills, learning how to advocate for health in our communities and most importantly, building confidence in ourselves and each other. There’s nothing quite like being in a room full of like-minded people who are all hyping each other up. It’s a feeling that stays with you long after the Summit is over.

The school trainings are another highlight for me. There’s something incredibly powerful about sharing what I’ve gained through YAHL with my peers. When I stand in front of a room full of other high school students, I’m not just talking at them—I’m connecting with them, sharing my story and hopefully inspiring them to take action too. I joined YAHL partly because my parents started smoking at a young age, and now they’re struggling to quit. It’s tough, and I don’t want any of my peers to have to go through that. Knowing that I can make even a small difference in someone’s life is what drives me to keep going.

Beyond the bigger health issues, I’ve also become passionate about smaller improvements that can make a big difference in my school. For example, I’ve been advocating for better food options in our school cafeteria. It’s frustrating to see salad with wilted lettuce and toppings that aren’t even refilled between the junior high and high school lunches. This year, one of my goals is to implement a policy at my school requiring water filters to be changed every six months. Dirty water shouldn’t be something we have to worry about, and I want to make that a reality for my school.

As I head into my senior year, I have been appreciating everything YAHL has done for me a little more recently. I’ve grown so much, not just as a leader, but as a person. The skills I’ve gained are things I’ll carry with me long after I leave high school.

YAHL is such an amazing group to be a part of. If you have a chance to be a part of YAHL I definitely recommend it. If you’re looking for a way to get involved, YAHL is the place to be.

Being part of YAHL has given me the chance to make a difference in my school community. I’ve organized two Elevate Student Health events at my school. Elevate Student Health is one of the YAHL campaigns focused on improving the overall well-being of students. This includes ensuring schools have clean drinking water, healthier concession options, and more time for physical activity during the school day.

When I held my first event, I was pretty nervous. I got to the location early and set up the table myself. Luckily, a friend offered to help me take surveys. That night, we managed to get more than 25 people to take the Elevate Student Health survey. The second event went even better. Another YAHL member from my school reached out, and we decided to hold an event during lunch at Oktaha High School. We discussed the importance of the Elevate Student Health campaign and collected even more surveys than at the first event.

Being part of YAHL has been a journey for me. Initially, when I signed up, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to participate in the program. After hosting my first event, I changed my mind. I realized how important the YAHL program is and how much of a difference it can make. Now, I’m grateful to be part of it.

Through YAHL, I’ve learned so many valuable skills. I’ve gained confidence, improved my public speaking, and even learned how to make conversation with new people. These are skills I never thought I’d develop so quickly.

Looking ahead, I’m excited about the future. Next year, I hope to hold more events at my school and participate in Take Down Tobacco Day. I want to continue making a positive impact and helping my fellow students lead healthier lives. Being part of YAHL has been an incredible experience, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.

Empowering Future Leaders: My Journey with Youth Action for Health Leadership by My Nguyen

My name is My, and I am a member of the YAHL Leadership Team. I aim to promote the power of leadership among current YAHL members and future YAHL Leadership Team members.

YAHL, which stands for Youth Action for Health Leadership, is a youth-led organization dedicated to enhancing youth health through campaigns such as CounterAct Tobacco and Elevate Student Health. CounterAct Tobacco focuses on regulating retail licensing of tobacco products, eliminating preemption from local authorities, and educating youth on the harmful effects of tobacco. Elevate Student Health aims to promote nutritious lunch options, encourage physical activity during the school day, and increase access to water, recognizing its importance for hydration and refreshment.

In addition to the Leadership Team summit, where I acquired valuable skills in public speaking and advocacy, I have significantly improved my ability to speak publicly. Since joining YAHL in 2021, I have overcome challenges such as stuttering, speaking too quickly, and not projecting my voice adequately. Each year with YAHL, I have been encouraged to address audiences, a skill I have applied frequently throughout the school year. This ability is invaluable when presenting to peers or participating in group discussions. Though this is my final leadership summit, I aspire to pass on this skill to future YAHL leaders, helping them gain confidence in advocating for their beliefs.

YAHL fosters a supportive and impactful community where everyone collaborates to develop strong, confident leadership skills. At the summit, I formed friendships with peers from across the state, appreciating the diversity and being inspired by the resilience of each individual who has overcome challenges to become enduring leaders. As youth supporting youth, YAHL embodies a collective commitment to growth and empowerment.

My name is Aaliyah Larson, and I’m currently a sophomore attending Stilwell High School. I joined YAHL in 2022, marking my first year on the YAHL Leadership Team. Being on the Leadership Team has provided an invaluable opportunity, enabling me to make new connections, practice my public speaking skills and make positive changes within my city and state.

Among the activities I engaged in this year, Swap Up Day stands out as a highlight. During lunch, we hosted a game where participants could “swap up” less nutritious foods for healthier options. By playing the game, students at my school could learn about which foods help you feel more energized, help you feel stronger or help you have better focus. It was great to see so many of my peers excited about this event.

Another opportunity I participated in was a presentation I did with another YAHL member. Together, we presented the CounterAct Tobacco campaign to local law enforcement, shedding light on the dangers of underage vaping and the necessity for improved policies that protect youth. Additionally, we hosted an event at a softball game, where we educated our community about the Elevate Student Health campaign. Through survey collection, we learned more about our school community’s perspectives on healthy food options and physical activity within our school environment.

I joined YAHL to learn more about  how to improve student health. Vaping is a big problem in my community. Many teens my age vape because it is exceedingly easy to access them, including through social media. Another concern is the accessibility of unhealthy foods. Through YAHL, my aim is to advocate for the incorporation of healthy food options and increased physical activity in schools. My school only requires one year of physical activity, which falls below the recommended level for my age group.

In conclusion, I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the YAHL program and am eager to make a difference in my community.

Advocating for Health: My YAHL Journey by Frankie Linker

My name is Frankie. I’m 16 years old and getting ready for my junior year of high school. I wanted to share my experience with an amazing program called Youth Action for Health Leadership (YAHL).

When I first learned about YAHL, I was intrigued. It offered a chance to truly make a difference in my community, which resonated with me. Plus, I’ve always been passionate about health, so joining YAHL felt like a natural fit.

My journey with YAHL began with a training session at my high school. There, I learned about two impactful campaigns: CounterAct Tobacco and Elevate Student Health. These initiatives aim to address pressing health issues affecting young people like us.

Let’s start with CounterAct Tobacco. This campaign focuses on combating underage tobacco and vape use. We’re working hard to make it more difficult for minors to access these harmful products. That means advocating for stricter regulations and better enforcement to prevent tobacco and vape sales to young people. But it’s not just about rules and regulations – we’re also raising awareness about the risks of tobacco and vaping by talking to people in our communities about how they can help support the campaign.

Then there’s Elevate Student Health. This campaign aims to promote wellness among students through physical activity and healthy eating. We believe that a healthy lifestyle is essential for success, both in and out of the classroom. So, we’re advocating for more opportunities for physical activity in schools and communities. We’re also working to make healthier food options more accessible in school cafeterias and vending machines because we know that good nutrition is crucial for overall well-being.

Being part of YAHL has been an amazing experience so far. Not only have I learned a lot about public health and advocacy, but I’ve also had the opportunity to make a real impact in my community. And if you’re passionate about health and want to make a difference too, I highly recommend joining YAHL. Together, we can create a healthier future for all of us.

Empowering Change: My Journey with Youth Action for Health Leadership (YAHL) by Lacey Laymon

I am Lacey Laymon, a senior at Keys High School, and I have been a member of Youth Action for Health Leadership (YAHL) for two years. Currently, I serve on the state leadership team.

YAHL actively engages in two youth-led campaigns: Elevate Student Health, which focuses on maintaining the health of our schools, and CounterAct Tobacco, which aims to eliminate youth tobacco use in the community. Throughout my involvement in YAHL, I have had numerous opportunities, including delivering presentations to local boards in my community to raise awareness about youth tobacco use. Additionally, I have met with my principal to address outdated wellness policies and participated in an event promoting healthier eating habits among students.

One of the most memorable experiences I’ve had through YAHL was attending the Leadership Team Summit in Oklahoma City. This event allowed me to develop public speaking, leadership and networking skills. More importantly it provided an opportunity to form lifelong friendships. As a part of the leadership team, I had the privilege of visiting the Oklahoma State Capitol where I engaged in discussions about YAHL with policymakers and representatives. Our conversations centered around our two campaigns and how those in positions to effect direct change in our state could contribute.

In the upcoming year my goal is to be more involved in YAHL and actively recruit more individuals to join the organization. I initially joined YAHL for the free Subway sandwiches at our school’s training. I have witnessed the positive impact it had on both myself and others. My experience transformed me into a passionate advocate as it opened my eyes to the importance of having a voice in my community and contributing to the overall health of my state.

My name is Kaydence, and I attend Purcell High School. I first heard about Youth Action for Health Leadership (YAHL) from Aisha – one of the YAHL staff – in my class during school. To become a member of YAHL, I had to go to the training for YAHL members in the fall where we learned about important health issues and how to be active in the YAHL program at Purcell HS. I learned many things that I didn’t know about like the fact that one third of the youth in Oklahoma are overweight or obese. I was surprised by that! I honestly didn’t think it was going to be that bad. I also learned about the many negative effects of smoking and vaping and how the tobacco companies advertise to kids. I didn’t know that, and I wanted to do something about it. I wanted to help make a change.
I participated in opportunities for both the Elevate Student Health Campaign and the CounterAct Tobacco Campaign. I helped host our school’s Swap Up Day for Elevate Student Health as well as a Halloween event for CounterAct Tobacco. Swap Up Day took place during lunch at my school, and the Halloween event took place at the lake in my town. I had so much fun at these events!
The experience I got from the two events helped me grow more confident in what I was doing to help with YAHL and the important health issues in Oklahoma. I have seen many fellow classmates vape in school. I wish to see less of this in my community, and I want to help with this issue. I joined YAHL because I wanted to make a change within my community. Making a change within my community is important to me because I have seen the negative effects of smoking and vaping and what the effects have done to people within my family.

My Voice Matters in YAHL by Mayra Amezcua

My name is Mayra Amezcua, and I am a junior at Howe Public Schools. YAHL stands for Youth
Action for Health Leadership. YAHL has two campaigns – CounterAct Tobacco and Elevate
Student Health. CounterAct Tobacco is trying to reduce underage tobacco use while Elevate
Student Health is trying to increase access to healthy food and drinks and physical activity in
schools. Elevate Student Health surveys are targeted towards students and staff at schools and
CounterAct Tobacco surveys are targeted to community members and parents of youth.
I joined YAHL when it first came in 2021. Since then, I have been a part of the leadership team
for two years. As a YAHL member, I have attended multiple events with other YAHL members.
The opportunities I have participated in so far include a principal meeting, fall festival event,
YAHL Leadership Summit, SwapUp Day and Take Down Tobacco Day! These opportunities
help me with my public speaking skills, career skills and networking skills. YAHL opportunities
impact our progress for a healthier Oklahoma. Leading these opportunities helps to change
Oklahoma state policies by collecting measures of progress like surveys and pledge cards to
show support from our community members. I look forward to participating in podcasts, school
board meetings and partner presentations in the upcoming year. One thing about YAHL is that
no matter where you live in Oklahoma, you can spread awareness about health issues.
Everyone can relate to health issues in some way, whether it’s themselves or a friend or family
member. Spreading awareness to other people is one reason I continue to be a part of YAHL.
Another great thing about YAHL is that every voice matters! My voice mattering to someone
other than my family is my drive to keep spreading awareness about how we can create a
healthier Oklahoma. Most people are unaware of the problems students face daily. YAHL is so
important for the future generations. Thank you for supporting YAHL.

Showing my School the Dangers of Teen Tobacco Use with YAHL

My name is Brayden Duncan, and I’m going to be a junior at Howe High School. I have been in YAHL for about a year. YAHL has two campaigns named Counteract Tobacco and Elevate Student Health. My first YAHL event was our fall festival, where we were able to collect a lot of surveys for CounterAct Tobacco and educate attendees about the campaign. It was easy and fun to get surveys and some people even asked more questions about the campaign. By collecting surveys, I learned how important data is to help update state policies.

Elevate Student Health works on getting healthier food options, more physical exercise and clean water for our schools. The main reason I joined YAHL is because I see young kids vaping, and they think it’s cool, so I want to make a change and try to educate them about the dangers of vaping. Being a member of YAHL, I have learned more leadership skills like public speaking, networking and hosting events with confidence. This year I hope to host more events to spread awareness in my community about tobacco, nutrition and physical activity. I am so excited to start the new school year with YAHL.
