Healthy Living Starts With Us by Jayden W.
My name is Jayden and I am a senior at Tahlequah High School. I work alongside other Youth Action for Health Leadership (YAHL) members to help bring YAHL, a program of the Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust, to Tahlequah to promote healthier lifestyles in our school and community.
YAHL focuses on helping youth understand important health issues and giving us the tools to create positive change. The program has two campaigns: CounterAct Tobacco and Elevate Student Health. CounterAct Tobacco focuses on reducing youth access to tobacco products, including vapes, by supporting policies that hold retailers accountable for tobacco sales and protect youth from harmful products. Elevate Student Health works to improve health in schools by promoting healthier food options, clean drinking water and more opportunities for physical activity.
Through YAHL, I work to promote healthier choices to fellow students and others in my community so they can live healthier lives. I believe learning about health at a young age can help people make better decisions for their future.
I joined YAHL because when I was younger, my grandfather passed away from lung cancer after smoking for most of his life. Watching someone I loved struggle with the effects of tobacco showed me how serious the consequences can be. I also have asthma, which makes healthy living especially important to me because I understand how difficult it can be to breathe when your lungs are not healthy. These experiences are a big reason why I care so much about helping others avoid harmful habits.
I have also seen friends and family members become addicted to nicotine products. Seeing addiction affect people close to me has shown me how difficult it can be to stop once someone starts using tobacco or vape products. Many youth are exposed to these products at a young age without fully understanding the risks or long-term effects.
I work to promote healthy living to my fellow students and others so they can live a full life. When youth work together and use their voices, we can help create healthier schools, healthier communities and a better future for everyone.
